POLICY

The university remains open, for academic classes and all other services, during inclement weather except in extreme circumstances determined solely by the president of the university.  The University Advancement Office notifies the local news media who publicize the closing.

Commuter students are encouraged to use good judgment in deciding whether to drive to campus during inclement weather.  University employees are expected to notify appropriate administrative personnel of inability to get to campus or late arrival.

On those occasions when severe weather occurs and the university remains open, all employees are expected to meet their employment obligations and to arrive for work on time. Those employees who arrive more than two hours late will be charged annual leave time (if available) or leave without pay. 

On those occasions when the university is closed by the president, employees of departments providing essential services are expected to report to work if at all possible.  Such departments include but are not limited to the physical plant. Employees uncertain of whether their presence is required should contact their supervisors. Equivalent time off will be awarded to staff members of essential service departments who work during such periods.

The City of Jonesboro sounds warning sirens when a tornado has been detected in our area.  Sirens are tested at 12:00 noon on a clear day and should be disregarded.

The following action should be taken in the event the tornado sirens are activated during a time when classes are in session:

• Except at siren test times, upon hearing sirens all campus personnel should move in a calm and orderly fashion to hallways and interior rooms on the lower levels of major buildings.
• Any radios available should be tuned to 91.9 FM KASU for maximum information during the alert period.

• The "all-clear" will be announced by the University Police by use of patrol car loudspeakers. Classes and normal activities are to resume when the all-clear is announced.
