Procedures Manual
Effective Date: 06/01/97
Policy Number: 07-04
Section: Human Resources
Subject: Educational Benefits
POLICY
- University employees (including military science personnel) their spouses
and their unmarried dependent children are entitled to the educational
benefits outlined below. (Reciprocal with other ASU campuses. ASU discount
is extended to partner institutions.)
- Tuition - Undergraduate Classification. Regular full-time employees,
their spouse and their unmarried dependent children may enroll for undergraduate
studies for credit or for audit on a space available basis for a 75% reduction
of the hourly tuition rate. (Course challenge exam fees do not qualify for
discounts.)
- Persons who utilize the undergraduate tuition discount may not accept a full
tuition university-sponsored scholarship. However, that person may accept a
$18.00 per credit hour university-sponsored scholarship.
-
Persons receiving financial aid will have the existing discount rate per
credit hour used in computing their cost of attendance. This rule applies to all
forms of financial aid, with the exception of the PELL grant which is an
entitlement program.
- Grants to the university, or contracts with the university, regardless of the
source of funds may not be charged at a rate higher than the person's tuition
rate. Example: If a student receives a stipend for tuition from a grant or a
contract and the student is eligible for the university employee discount, the
grant or contract can be charged no more than the discount rate for tuition.
- Tuition - Graduate Classification. Regular full-time employees, their
spouses, and their unmarried dependent children are eligible for a 50 percent
reduction of hourly tuition rate.
- Persons who choose to accept full-fee grant-in-aid or graduate assistantships
are charged the regular tuition, plus any other course fees, such as music.
- Staff Development. All regular full-time employees are eligible for
job enrichment opportunities including the following:
- With the approval of the supervisor, the employee may enroll in one
3-semester-hour course for credit or audit during the fall and/or spring
semester during the regular workday -- Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and
5 p.m. (includes lunch hour).
- With the approval of the supervisor, an employee may enroll in one 3-hour
course each summer term during the regular work day provided the employee takes
2 hours of vacation per each class period. This policy is waived for Admissions
Counselors, who may take one 3-hour course per summer term without taking
vacation time since the nature of their jobs takes them away from campus in the
fall and spring.
- With the approval of the supervisor, there is no restriction on the number of
courses an employee may take after the end of the employee's workday up to the
maximum load allowed by the university.
- Persons retired with a minimum of ten consecutive years of service to the university, their spouses and their unmarried
dependent children are entitled to tuition discounts as outlined in 1.a. and b.
above. In addition, the tuition discount to unmarried dependents continues in
the event of the death of the retiree.
- University employees placed on disability, their spouses and their unmarried
dependent children are entitled to tuition discounts as outlined in 1.a. and b.
above. In addition, the tuition discount to unmarried dependents continues in
the event of the death of the disabled person.
